How to Use Cheap Lighting for Photography

Things You’ll Need:

  • roll of white paper same width as box
  • masking tape

  • white gloss spray paint
Step1
Car shades work wonders for fill-in or bounce lighting. Car shades work wonders for fill-in or bounce lighting. Decide what you are going to be shooting. Different photos sometimes take different lighting. If, for instances, you plan on shooting mostly landscapes or outdoor scenes, you'll be using sunlight and cloud cover as your lighting source. Even then, however, you may need to fill in the shadows on your subject with a bit of extra bounce lighting. When you have a subject in mind, and in place, position your new fill in light tool against a rock or tree, directing the bounced light to fill some of the shadow's in your subject. Whether a person, multiple people, or even close up of nature, this will help you create the perfect shot!

Make sure your floor lamp head is adjustable. Make sure your floor lamp head is adjustable. Purchase a desk or floor lamp. Make sure that your lamp are adjustable, with tiltable heads. This will allow you to position your light to fall where you wish it to go. If you can find a floor lamp with multiple heads, even better. A multiple head floor lamp, where the heads are at different heights - will give you more flexibility in lighting your subject.
Step3
Purchase light bulbs. Light bulbs producing full spectrum or "daylight" light are now available in many watts and styles. Purchase the correct light bulbs that will fit properly in your lamps, at the highest wattage possible. If your lamp can take 100 watt bulbs - those are the ones you should purchase. Simply insert them into your floor or desk lamp and you have a light source perfect for photography at your disposal. Softening this light with a homemade soft box will eliminate harsh shadows and provide a better lighting situation for your subject.
Step4
Build a light box. A light box will assist you in shooting still photos, or anything you want to have a more wrapped around light. They are easy to make, and can be made to fit any size object you wish to photography by just varying the size of the box you use. Making multiple boxes and storing them, allows you to change boxes quickly and continuing your shooting schedule.

Making Fill-in, Soft Box and Light Boxes

Step1
Create your own fill in light source by taking a car sun screen and a bit of paint. Spray one side of the screen with high gloss white paint. This may take a couple of coats to cover any writing or pictures. On the other side, spray it with a silver metallic spray paint. Allow to dry completely, then use to bounce light back to your subject.
Step2
Build your own soft box easily by taking a medium size cardboard box, preferably one that is only 3 or 4 inches in depth, and cut a hole the shape of your light in the back. Tape the flaps together so that they are open. Tape white tissue paper inside the flaps but away from the heat of the light bulb. This will soften the harshness of the direct light, and still allow you to direct the light where you want it.
Step3
Make your own Light Box. Take a large cardboard box and securely tape the bottom. Spray paint the entire inside of the box white. Cut rectangles out of the sides of the box, leaving only 1-1.5 inches around the edges of each side. Tape white tissue paper on 3 of the sides, leaving the 4th empty. By leaving the 4th side empty, you will be able to lift the box and place it over anything you might want to shoot.
Step4
Shoot with your Light Box. Use the rolls of either white or black paper as backgrounds, taping it high in the back and allowing it to seamlessly roll out to the outside of the box. Use the box flaps as extra bounce/fill in light by closing them slightly. Place your desk or floor lights on one or 2 sides of the outside of the box and begin your shoot.
