How to Install a Range Receptacle

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Keyhole or saber saw
  • Cordless drill
  • 6/3 SER copper cable
  • Fish tape
  • Cable ripper
  • Multipurpose tool
  • Cable clamp
  • Cable staples
  • Insulated screwdrivers
  • Double-pole circuit breaker with 50 or 60 amps
  • Long-nose pliers
  • Receptacle with 50 or 60-amps and 125/250-voltage range
Step1
Determine where to install the range receptacle cable. Use the keyhole or saber saw to make a hole between eight and ten inches from the floor.
Step2
Go down into the basement. Use the cordless drill and drill a hole into the floor. Push the SER copper cable through the hole so that it extends from the service panel into the wall hole.
Step3
Grasp the fish tape with your hands and pull the cable through the wall. With the cable ripper, remove the sheathing from the cable. Use the ripper to also remove the insulation on the wires. Use the multipurpose tool to put the wire ends beneath the cable clamps and use the cable staples to position them in tightly.
Step4
Place the range receptacle on the wall using the insulation screwdrivers. Attach the receptacle's cover.
Step5
Access the breaker switch on the main panel. Turn off the power. Use the long nose pliers to attach both red and black hot wires to the range breaker.
Step6
Position the breaker within the bus var. Install both the bare ground and white neutral wires to the grounded bus bars.
