Table (furniture)

A wooden dining table and chairs.

A table is an item of furniture comprising a surface supported by a base or legs. It may be used to hold articles such as food at a convenient or comfortable height when sitting, and is therefore often used in conjunction with chairs. Unlike many earlier table designs, most modern tables do not have drawers, although they are not uncommon. A table specifically intended for writing and office work is a desk, which may incorporate one or more drawers in the base. Some tables have removable sections or leaves used to extend the surface, or utilise hinged extensions of the table top known as drop leaves.

How to Buy Floor Lamps

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate Step1
Consider the purpose and placement of the floor lamp. If it is for ambient purposes, look for a torchiere. If it sheds light downward on a nearby chair, pair it with an open-bottomed lampshade with a reflective interior. If it lights a work area and isn't always needed, purchase a swing-arm lamp.
Step2
Measure the width of the space available for the floor lamp and keep this in mind when shopping, especially when looking at lampshades.
Step3
Determine the optimal height for the open edge of the lampshade. An uplight's top edge needs to be higher than a standing person's eye level. A reading lamp's lower edge needs to be at or below the eye level of someone seated nearby. The idea is to protect eyes from prolonged exposure to bare-bulb glare.
Step4
Select a fluorescent, incandescent or halogen-style light source. Fluorescent bulbs are environmentally friendly. Halogen bulbs can generate extreme heat.
Step5
Look at the floor lamp's power switch location, convenience and type: traditional rotating switch, touch-on switch or a remote with dimmer control. A touch-on switch or remote control is often most convenient for seated floor lamp users.
Step6
Compare lamps from a safety standpoint. A swing-arm floor lamp should swing easily when touched firmly, but not when accidentally bumped. The base of the floor lamp should be wide enough to maintain stability, especially if there are small children or rambunctious pets in the house.
Step7
Choose a style, texture and color for your floor lamp and its shade that have the impact you want. A neutral base and shade, or a shade the same color as the wall behind it, will blend in. Alternatively, draw the eye to the lamp by purchasing brightly colored shades or a shade in a color that contrasts with the wall behind it.
